During the 2020 pandemic, many people began to focus more on being prepared and self-sufficient. If you go to the grocery store and can't find milk and eggs to feed your family or yourself, then what do you do? We started with chickens because they're my spirit animal, and it had always been a dream of mine to have them as pets. However, the food conversion ratio for chickens is quite high, meaning they eat a lot and don't produce eggs until they're 6-8 months old. (Food conversion ratio refers to how much you feed them compared to what you get in return, such as meat or eggs).

After enjoying our chickens and getting them settled into our small suburban backyard, we decided to explore raising quail. We went on a pandemic date to learn how to butcher and process quail meat. Once I learned how to butcher quail and realized I could do it myself, and after tasting the meat and eggs, we fully committed with 50 chicks! There's a small learning curve since quail chicks have a tendency to harm themselves in the first two weeks, but the benefits are incredible! Plus, you can raise them anywhere (unless you have a strict HOA). They really are the new chicken! We can raise 200-300 quail in the space where we raise 10 chickens.
